The royals, who were making their first official visit to Wales since announcing their recent engagement, were invited to attend a session of StreetGames’ award-winning Doorstep Sport and Us Girls Wales programmes.

The event, which took place at the STAR Hub centre in Tremorfa this Thursday, saw the couple engaging with tutors, volunteers and participants for well over an hour, during which time they also observed a wide range of activities, including table tennis and a group dance routine.

StreetGames’ ‘Us Girls Wales’ programme has been named the Sporting Experience of the Year for 2017. The prize, handed out as part of this year’s Wales Sport Awards was granted to the winners in recognition of their efforts to energise and empower disadvantaged young women through sport and physical activity.

Judges noted that the programme had achieved “staggering results [in] attracting new ‘hard-to-reach’ female participants, volunteers, coaches and leaders”.

This year StreetGames launched the Fit and Fed campaign, an exciting new initiative aimed at tackling the hidden issues of holiday hunger and inactivity. It’s an unfortunate reality that low-income families often struggle during the holidays, with as many as three million young people being impacted throughout the UK.  Fit and Fed seeks to address this problem by providing free holiday activity sessions to some of the poorest communities in Britain, as well as a healthy and nutritious meal for every single participant.
