Sport changes lives. It makes us fitter and healthier. Participation opens doors to new places and allows young people to make new friends. It provides them with fresh challenges and opportunities to realise their potential.

Doorstep Sport broadens horizons and raises ambitions. Young people learn the skills and build the confidence they need to outperform the expected norms of their neighbourhood. By increasing their expectations of what they can achieve and keeping out of trouble, securing an apprenticeship or gaining a place at university become realistic options.

Benefits for volunteers

In additon to improving the quality of life for the young people who participate in the sessions Doorstep Sport generates leadership opportunities. It’s our policy at StreetGames to recruit young leaders from within the disadvantaged community the projects serve. Once active as a young leader, volunteers earn respect from the wider community which has a profound effect on the young person’s self-esteem.

On the whole, Doorstep Sport volunteers start out as participants: they were kids from the surrounding streets who gave the activity a go and stuck at it.

Taking on this type of organisational responsibility improves the life chances of the young leaders. Volunteering is an established pathway to gaining recognised qualifications, particularly in the sport and leisure industry.

A virtuous circle

Once a Doorstep Sport project seeds itself, young volunteers are able to train up the next age group to become volunteers too. As a result, the community benefits from a self-perpetuating, positive focus that also equips successive waves of volunteers with opportunities they wouldn’t have previously enjoyed.

You can make a difference

Sport brings huge benefits to young people’s lives. Even a small donation helps us to make those benefits available to our most disadvantaged communities.
