Why is it needed?

In every school and community across the country, around 40% of children aged 5-15, are classified as ‘low active’ [1].  In areas of highest deprivation where StreetGames works, 26% of children (1 in 4) are overweight or obese, compared with 11.7% in the least deprived areas. [2]

See the government's advice on children's weekly activity.

Where does it take place?

Let’s Get Physical is available to all areas of the UK.  Please contact our Head of Health for more information.

When is it run?

Let’s Get Physical runs all year round, delivering sessions in both school and community settings, during term-time and holidays.

How does it work?

Your Let’s Get Physical programme is custom-designed for your area.  It comprises school- and community-based sessions, incentives and evaluation measures, chosen to suit non-sporty children.

To date, Let’s Get Physical has been successfully delivered in Birmingham, Solihull, Sandwell, Lincoln, Warwick, Coventry, Brent and Maidstone.  Programmes range in size from 6 schools and one community location, to 45 schools and 6 community locations.  In total, over 1,300 children have made 8,200 attendances with an 83% retention rate and a 73% improvement in overall physical activity levels.

LGP is compliant with NICE Guidance PH17 [3] and the Standard Evaluation Framework [4], and has been graded as Level 2 in the Nesta Standards of Evidence.

Programme Goals

  • Reducing the number of children who do no regular physical activity at all
  • Increasing the number children who meet the CMO physical activity recommendations (7 x 60 mins)
  • Helping more children and families take part in sport together
  • Training the local workforce to make sport more fun for non-sporty children
  • Making a measurable contribution to local health and wellbeing priorities
  • Learning and sharing learning, to create a tried and tested programme that can be replicated at scale across the country
