In celebration of this year’s International Women’s Day, StreetGames and its partners at NewVic College and Active Newham, respectively, came together to host two exciting ‘Us Girls Rocks’ festivals. The events, held either side of International Women’s Day, on the 7th and 9th of March, succeeded in encouraging over 200 local women and girls to become involved and ‘get active’.

NewVic College: 'Here to Slay'

Ambassadors from NewVic’s ‘This Girl Can’ and ‘Here Come the Girls’ groups ran the event, with funding from AoC Sport and their Jack Petchey Award. Over 100 girls took part on the day in trampolining, badminton, football and archery events – all of which were set to a special student-picked soundtrack. The event, which also boasted its own customised SnapChat filter, provided participants with healthy food and ‘mocktails’, as well as amazing prizes, including USB speakers and fitness tracking watches.

Almost 60% of participants reported hearing about the event through friends, while 50% claimed that the main motivation for attending was simply “to have fun”. These findings further reinforce Us Girls’ core ethos of ‘Fun, Fitness, Friends’.

Active Newham

The Active Newham event was held at Newham Leisure Centre in Plaistow and attracted over 100 women and girls of all ages and ability levels. Participants took part in a variety of activities from Zumba and football to ‘Wallball’, with mini-manicures also being offered throughout the day. Here’s what one of the attendees had to say about the event:

“We came as a family, and the girls have had a great time trying out everything. I have tried Soca Aerobics for the first time which I enjoyed and also got as nice manicure. I’m going to join Michelle’s Zumba class now after taking part today”.
