Dave is a former middle to long-distance runner, Commonwealth gold medallist and the one-time world record holder for the 5000 meters – a title he held for over 3 years beginning in 1982.

Since retiring, Dave has worked as both a television and radio pundit, represented various sporting charities, and served as the Chief Executive of UK Athletics from 1997 to 2007, steering the organisation through a difficult period to lay the foundation for its recent generation of star athletes and Olympic champions.
