Carney's Community is a registered charity aimed at taking disadvantaged young people off the streets and away from a life of crime and despair. This, they achieve by giving young people the necessary skills, discipline and self-respect required to succeed.

Inspired by boxing legend Mick Carney, the organisation's approach is an effective, if slightly unusual one - employing a resource-intensive method focused on creating lasting change through hard work and dedication. Its work reduces offending, re-offending and anti-social behaviour rates, whilst also improving social mobility and community cohesion - thereby improving the quality of life for both the individuals it serves and the wider communities in which it operates.

Carney's creates change through a mix of physical activity, including free boxing and yoga sessions for young people and unemployed adults, as well as through intensive and sustained one-to-one mentoring sessions - which teach education and employability skills.

Carney's is also involved with StreetGames' Fit and Fed work, running a twice-weekly session that plays host to around 40 young people aged 11-18. This typically includes a 90-minute boxing session, followed by a group meal. Carney's prides itself on providing nutritious dinners within a supportive and community-focused environment. That, and always preparing the main course from scratch!

These Fit and Fed sessions are now so well established that the charity has even expanded the provision into an all-year offer - ensuring no child goes hungry, even when school starts back up.

According to the charity, Fit and Fed "addresses a real need in our community around poor diet, food poverty and inactivity". Asked what they like best about the sessions, participants reply: “I like getting to try all the different dishes that they cook for us and it feels like we are all eating in a big family”.
