This month’s project spotlight shines on Burgess Sports – a Southwark-based community sports association doing big things for young people in need! Comprising several local sports clubs, including Southwark Tigers (rugby & hockey), Burgess Park Academy (Cricket), Peckham BMX and more, Burgess Sports aims to promote greater cooperation between teams, leading to multi-sport events that benefit the entire community.

Since 2016, the charity has been heavily involved in StreetGames ambassadorial work, even helping to launch the very first Volunteer Academy in London in November of last year. The Academy, run by the team of Ash and Ish - two former Burgess Sports volunteers-turned coaches - provides an informal setting in which the young participants are taught key skills in the areas of sport coaching, nutrition, confidence-building, event management, and Health and Safety.

The course itself takes place over ten diverse sessions, covering both the theory and practical elements of each topic – ensuring that all volunteers come away from the course with a robust understanding of their roles, as well as a far greater chance of gaining placements and further employment.

The charity also offers a range of sports camps and drop-in sessions for local young people. For more information on Burgess Sports, and to see how you can get involved, visit:
