This month's Project Spotlight looks at the rapidly growing Benson Community Project - winners of the coveted Project of the Year award at this year's StreetGames National Awards!

What began as a simple game of football has now grown into the 'pathway of choice' for an entire local community - helping more young people to connect with their area through sport and social opportunities. Benson Community Project works with the people of Benson, allowing them to take the lead on choosing the time and place of their activities, and has quickly become a trusted, well-embedded part of its region. Following initial attendances of 30 to 40 participants per week, that figure has now ballooned to well over 300 across five to six weekly events, and reaching upwards of 500 during sunny summer months.

Adopting what it calls a 'person-centred approach', Benson Community Project offers an open-door policy - 'it doesn't matter who you are, where you're from or what you're ability level is', everyone is welcome to take part. Simply sign in to join in! And it isn't just for young people either. Benson believes that all parents, children and peers have a place in the future of the project, taking part in all sports together as part of a wider social gathering.

With its warm and friendly atmosphere, the project has attracted no end of fantastic volunteers, drawn from and serving a community that continually acts as the driving force of the project. In 2017 alone, Benson attracted over 20,000 attendees to take part!

Says project co-founder Paul Landucci: “I have always been overwhelmed by the local community, and how the simplest of ideas can bring such warmth and desire to be a part of the project and in community engagement”.

Congratulations Paul, and everyone at Benson Community Project!
